There are three simple questions you need to answer in order to be sure that you are purchasing the knife that's right for you

What will you use the knife for?

  • This is the most important question you must answer, since everything else depends on it. How, and where, you use your knife can be:
  • Indoor/Simple Tasks - These are light duty activities such as slitting open boxes or cutting string/twine.
  • Outdoor/Camping - Heavier activites may include cutting rope or pruning branches. Also carried during hiking/backpacking.
  • Hunting/Fishing: These knives will be perform more specialized tasks such as filleting or dressing game.
  • Tactical/Survival: This will be the most heavy-duty knife that can be used for every type of survival situation
  • Collectible: Limited edition, custom, or older out of production knives. Typically for display only.
  •

What type of knife/special features?

  • Type -  Knives come in two basic types, fixed blade and folding. Depending on your intended use, do you need a blade that's always out and ready, or is a compact, easy to carry/store knife (with a sturdy locking blade) all you need.
  •
  • Features - Teh available features of a knife will vary greatly with its intended use. Some of the more popular features available are, single-handed opening, light weight, blade thickness & style (cutting, skinning, gutting), saw edge, degree of sharpness
  •

Materials of Construction?

Blade - A good knife blade should be able to retain its edge, be easy to resharpen and be rust resistant. The most common blade materials are custom steels (S30V, ATS-34, BG-42), and stainless steel (420HC)

Handle - The handle material will be most dependent upon your intended use. A simple plastic or wooden handle may be acceptable for the occassionally used indoor/outdoor knife, while a textured composite handle, for a no-slip grip in wet conditions, would be better suited for hunting and survival situations.

Collectors, however, may purchase a knife simply for the uniqueness of the handle material (bone, horn, exotic wood, etc).

If you can answer these questions, you'll have no problem locating the knife that's right for you. Still uncertain, no big deal. take your time and look around .
